December 1st: Flat Stanley Brayden Learns History and Rides a Carousel in Nuremberg

Hi, kids! It’s me, Flat Stanley Brayden, back with another day of adventures in Nuremberg. Today was a mix of learning about history, eating yummy food, and ending the night with some holiday fun. Let’s jump right in!

Breakfast at the Park Plaza

The day started with another big breakfast at the Park Plaza. Pancakes, fresh rolls, eggs—you name it, I ate it (okay, maybe not everything, but I tried!). After breakfast, we bundled up and got ready for a special tour to learn about some important moments in Nuremberg’s history.

Exploring WWII History

At 10 AM, our guide, another Rob, picked us up at the hotel for the Nuremberg WWII Tour. It was funny because two of the people on our tour, a mom from Pennsylvania and her daughter from Arizona, were also on the culinary tour with us yesterday! Joining us were a friendly family of four from southern Ohio (pretty close to Huntington, WV).

The first stop on our tour was the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, where huge rallies were held during WWII. It was a bit eerie to stand in such a big space and think about all the history that happened there. Rob told us stories about how these rallies were designed to feel grand and powerful—almost like something out of a movie.

Next, we went to Zeppelin Field, where Hitler gave many of his speeches. It felt strange to be in a place with such a heavy history, but Rob explained why it’s important to learn from the past so we can build a better future.

Our last stop was the Nuremberg Palace of Justice and its Courtroom 600, where the Nuremberg Trials were held after WWII. This is where major war criminals were put on trial, and Rob showed us the exact spots where the judges and defendants sat. It was a powerful moment to see history come to life.

After the tour, Rob brought us back to the hotel. I warmed up for a bit and thought about all the things I’d learned before heading out for more fun in the Old City.

Dinner at Bratwurstglöcklein

By evening, it was time for dinner, so we walked over to Bratwurstglöcklein, a famous spot for traditional German food. I tried two kinds of sausage, potato salad, and sauerkraut—it was delicious! My favorite was the little Nuremberg sausages—they’re small, but packed with flavor.

They think I'm cute in any country.

Holiday Fun at the Children’s Christmas Market

After dinner, it was time for some festive fun at the Children’s Christmas Market. The whole market looked like something out of a storybook, with twinkling lights and happy families everywhere. I even got to ride a beautiful merry-go-round with shiny horses and carriages. It was so much fun, I didn’t want it to stop!

We walked around the market some more and listened to a choir singing Christmas songs outside the Frauenkirche church. The music was so pretty, I just had to stop and enjoy it for a while.

Wishing for Luck and Tasty Snacks

Next, I visited the Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain), where I spun the golden ring for good luck. Don’t tell anyone, but I made a wish—I hope it comes true!

By this time, I was ready for a snack, so we stopped for Apfelküchle, which are fried apple slices covered in powdered sugar. They were warm, sweet, and oh-so-delicious! As a special treat to take back, we picked up some stollen, a traditional Christmas fruitcake. We got two kinds: Original Thuringian Christmas Stollen for Toni and Original Thuringer Mandelstollen (almond cake) for Rob.

Heading Back for the Night

As the night grew colder and the twinkling lights made everything feel extra magical, we decided it was time to head back to the hotel. My feet were tired from all the walking, but my heart was full from such an amazing day.

I learned so much about history, tried some yummy new foods, and had a blast at the Christmas market. Tomorrow, I’ll be boarding a river cruise on the Danube River for the next part of this holiday adventure. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

And we get back to the room and Rob was excited to see his team on TV (but the sound was in German)
